Early Years Specialists
St John’s Anglican College has gained an enviable national reputation for excellence in Early Years education through our action research program involving our teachers in partnership with leading universities.
Teaching staff have developed new strategies for teaching Prep mathematics and national benchmarking has shown our students have benefited dramatically from this program with a significant increase in mathematics learning from start to end of 2009. In 2010 the College has expanded this program across Prep to Year 2 and has commenced a similar focus on enhancing the early years English program with particular attention on the teaching and learning of reading.
Our teachers have been asked to participate in a number of mentoring programs and have previously provided advice to teachers from numerous independent schools on developing effective Prep literacy and numeracy programs. Other staff are regularly invited by the Queensland Studies Authority to contribute to the development of assessment processes for early years education.
The College has been duly recognised for this expertise by having been selected as a Centre of Excellence in mentoring pre-service teachers from Brisbane universities.
